WASHINGTON (September 19, 2016) -- Founder of IndependentlyPR, LaWanda White was one of this weekend’s Power 30 Under 30 Award recipients presented by Apex Society and Porsche Cars of North America.
LaWanda was recognized as one of 30 recipients under the age of 30 in the District who have received extraordinary success in media and entertainment. The award was presented by WUSA 9 multimedia journalist, Ellen Bryan. Upon receiving her award, White graced the podium, unscripted with the charge to push the industry forward for women who have traditionally been misrepresented and typecasted in the digital and media space.
“I also have a boutique public relations agency which is IndependentlyPR and what we do is work for art, education, music and culture and we’re really interested in moving the industry forward, especially for women in color…”
In April 2016, LaWanda was also one of 3 speakers at Georgetown University’s Brave Summit, Unclassic Beauties: Women in Media/Entertainment alongside actress, Nicole Behart and fashion journalist, Jamé Jackson and moderated by professor, Dr. Soyica Diggs Colbert. In this conversation, White navigated through the historically unfavorable depiction of black women in the media and role that it has played in perpetuating those images.
White also handles communications, event management and digital marketing at Georgetown University in the Division of Student Affairs.
